The story and history of Saint Euphemia. Euphemia was the daughter of a senator named Philophronos and his wife Theodosia and born in Chalcedon, a city of Bithynia in Asia Minor which was a Roman province under the rule of the Roman Emperor Diocletian (r.284-305). Emperor Diocletian mounted some of the fiercest persecutions of the early Church especially in the East of the Empire. The Roman proconsul of Asia, Priscus, ordered that all of the inhabitants of Chalcedon were to take part in rituals and sacrifices to Mars, the Roman God of War (also called Ares). Many Christians, including Euphemia, went into hiding to avoid the order. They were discovered, imprisoned and tortured. Euphemia was tortured on the wheel but still refused to renounce her faith. She was sentenced to death in the arena where she died of wounds inflicted by the wild animals who attacked her.
