The story and history of Saint Charles Borromeo. Charles was part of a noble and prosperous family, the son of Count Gilbert Borromeo and Margaret Medici who was the sister of Pope Pius IV. He became a lawyer and was then appointed cardinal of Milan. He founded colleges and hospitals, which he built with his vast wealth. When the pestilence was ravaging Milan Charles Borromeo , went three times barefooted round the city in his cardinal's robes, and with a halter round his neck, humbly offering himself a sacrifice for the people in order to minister the Sacraments to the dying; yet neither he nor any one of the twenty-eight voluntary priests who accompanied him caught the infection.
